The 8th edition of the ARCHINOVA Annual Architectural Awards was held on October 6, in which the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria is a partner. At the ceremony, which took place at the Inter Expo Center, 10 projects were awarded. Prof. arch. Borislav Borisov, Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria, gave the award in the category "Realizations - Multifamily residential buildings to the architectural studio “Amfion” for the apartment complex in Student City, built on the corner of St. Kliment Ohridski ”and Prof. G. Bradislavov ”.
The building, initially, was intended as a dormitory for students. Its key location and attractive architecture arouse justified interest and after the revision of the original project the site was sold as a multi-family residential building with apartments. To make this possible, the rooms were united, the laundry and common areas in the basement were converted into basements, parking spaces were set aside.
Despite the total change of function, the facade was preserved according to the original design. The architectural effect is created by the contrast of the flat facade panels and the concave windows, enhanced by the contrast between white and dark gray. By changing the angle of the windows to the facade panel, the dark openings in it change their shape from a rectangle to a trapezoid. The dramatism is intensified by white bars extending the volume of the window recess and hiding the air conditioning systems.
The building is finished with a terraced floor hidden behind a broken wall and a pergola in dark gray. Their role is to cover up in an aesthetic way the future arbitrariness of the occupants of the floor, such as solutions for glazing, roofing or joining terraces.
